Advice

The standard TV resolution until Hi Def arrived in 1998 was called NTSC, and had a resolution of 525 lines per inch.  All the consumer grade cameras until 1998 were NTSC.  VHS had been replaced by 8mm cameras by 1998, so all VHS tapes are 520 lines per inch.

Most 8mm cameras are 520 lines per inch as well, but most sold after Y2K were 720 lines per inch (TV's Hi Def), and some were 1080 lines per inch.

The size of TVs has changed a lot since the 80's.  A VHS that looks good on a 12 inch screen looks pretty bad on a 70 inch screen because all the little imperfections get magnified (along with the good parts of the pictures!)  The old NTSC standard just wasn't make for today's giant screens.

My advice is:

  • For VHS, Economy grade does not improve resolution.   For later Hi8, resolution is degraded to 520.
  • If you have 8mm or MiniDV tapes, you should consider the Standard or Premium grades for this reason.

My advice is:

  • For VHS, the automatic upgrade to 720 lines per inch conversion means that the economy grade will look fine no matter how big your TV is.
  • For 8mm, if you know it's recorded at 520 lines per inch, you won't be able to tell the difference if you record at 1080 lines per inch.
  • For MiniDV tapes, these are certainly 720 lines per inch, and might be 1080.  You can really tell the difference, between 720 and 1080.
  • Therefore, use the features and included extras to make the decision between the Economy and Premium grade recording.

Advice

For MiniDV, Premium is worth the money.  Economy works, but if your camera was an ultra high definition device you will appreciate the difference.

Look at my advice under Economy for tips about how to tell what resolution your tape might be.

Home Movies 45ยข / foot, plus $30 per customer setup charge

While there are two main film widths (8mm and 16 mm) and two general types of film (those with and without sound) none of these distinctions have an impact on the cost of digitizing home movies.
