Medium Format Negatives

Medium format film is sized ranging from 6×4.5 cm to 6×6 cm (the two most common sizes) up to 6×17 cm. Unlike 35mm film, the edges are not perforated. The film designations are 120 and 220 film. Medium format films are digitized at 4800 DPI to match the grain size in the film. Digitizing at lower DPI is not advisable, because low

resolution produces a digital image that appears out of focus. We will use 48 bit pixel color, with an optical density of 4.0 Dmax. JPEG-LS compression produces an image file of 3 to 10 MB. With theJPEG-LS, the TIFF file is no longer needed, as 100% of the information contained in a TIFF file is in the JPEG-LS file.

Large Format Negatives

Large format film is found in sizes such as 4×5 in to 8×10 in. Unlike 35mm film, the edges are not perforated, and come in sheets. Large format films are digitized at 4800 DPI to match the grain size in the film. Digitizing at lower DPI is not advisable, as low resolution produces a digital image that appears out of focus. We will use 48 bit per pixel color, with an optical density of 4.0 Dmax. JPEG-LS compression produces an image file of 10 to 2o MB. With the JPEG-LS, the TIFF file is no longer needed, as 100% of the information contained in the TIFF file is in the JPEG-LS file.
